Claude in India 2026: Opus 5 vs Sonnet 5, and What Each Costs

Two models at a 2.5x price gap, and the cheaper one covers most work. The interesting news in August 2026 was a pricing decision, not a benchmark.

Short answer

Should I use Claude Opus 5 or Sonnet 5?

Claude Opus 5 is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 output. Claude Sonnet 5 is $2 and $10, and on 10 August 2026 Anthropic made that introductory pricing permanent - the planned step up on 1 September was cancelled. Sonnet 5 was launched on 30 June as a cheaper way to run agents, and for most work it is the right default. Opus 5 earns its premium on large codebases and multi-file work.

Our practical verdict

Claude in August 2026 is two models with a clear division of labour. Opus 5 is the flagship at $5 per million input tokens and $25 output. Sonnet 5, launched on 30 June as a cheaper way to run agents, sits at $2 and $10.

The notable development was a pricing decision rather than a capability one. Sonnet 5's introductory rates were scheduled to run through 31 August, with a step up implied on 1 September. On 10 August Anthropic made them permanent. Anyone who had budgeted around a September increase can stop.

That makes Sonnet 5 the sensible starting point. At two-fifths of Opus 5's output cost it handles the bulk of professional work, and the honest way to justify Opus 5 is to find a task that measurably fails on Sonnet rather than one that merely feels better.

Shortlist

Recommended options to compare

Use this as a starting list, then compare live India prices and warranty before buying.

01

Pick 1

Opus 5, $5 in / $25 out per million tokens

The flagship, and the strongest option for complex coding across large codebases or multi-file changes. Also the model that wins most blind writing comparisons. Buy it for work where the quality of the output is the product.

02

Pick 2

Sonnet 5, $2 in / $10 out

Launched 30 June 2026 as a cheaper way to run agents, and permanently priced at these rates since 10 August. At two-fifths of Opus 5's output cost, this is the tier to benchmark against first.

03

Pick 3

The permanent pricing matters

Introductory pricing was set to run through 31 August with a step up implied on 1 September. That step is gone. If you were planning around a September increase, you no longer need to.

04

Pick 4

Where Claude leads

Long documents, careful writing and editorial review, and coding across large repositories. In blind testing it takes its widest margins in writing-focused categories.

05

Pick 5

Where it does not

Breadth of consumer ecosystem, image generation and third-party app integrations, where a general assistant usually fits better.

Read the editorial notes

Where Opus 5 earns the premium is complex coding - specifically projects involving large codebases or multi-file work, where holding context across many files is the whole difficulty. It is also the stronger writing model: in blind testing across eight categories Claude won four, with its widest margins in the writing-focused ones. If you produce reports, long-form content or marketing copy where the prose is the deliverable, that is the relevant finding.

The limitation is breadth. Claude is not the place to go for image generation, a wide consumer app ecosystem, or deep third-party integrations. Those are real needs for some buyers and they point at a different product.

For Indian buyers, check the final card charge including tax, confirm your employer's policy on work files in a consumer workspace, and keep client-confidential material, financial records and identity documents out of it regardless of which model you pick.

FAQ

Should I use Claude Opus 5 or Sonnet 5?

Start on Sonnet 5 at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens - it covers most work at two-fifths of the flagship's output cost. Move to Opus 5 at $5 and $25 for large codebases, multi-file changes, or writing where quality is the deliverable.

Did Claude Sonnet 5 pricing go up in September 2026?

No. Anthropic made the introductory $2 and $10 rates permanent on 10 August 2026. The step up that had been implied for 1 September was cancelled.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT for writing?

In blind comparisons Claude takes its largest margins in writing-focused categories, so it is the stronger pick for reports, long-form content and anything where the prose itself matters. For mixed everyday work a general assistant is usually broader.

Features, model access, limits, privacy controls, and India billing can change. Choice IQ evaluates practical workflow fit and recommends checking the provider's current official terms before paying.
