Short answer

Which bank gives the highest FD rate in India?

FD rates in India currently run from about 2.5% to 8.30%, and small finance banks pay the most - Shivalik Small Finance Bank offers up to 8.50% for senior citizens on selected tenures. Among large banks, Kotak Mahindra leads senior citizen rates at about 7.30%, followed by Axis and Bank of Baroda at about 7.25%, ICICI and PNB at 7.10%, SBI at 7.05% and HDFC at 7.00%. The rate you compare should be the after-tax one, because FD interest is taxed at your slab.

Our practical verdict

Fixed deposit rates in India in 2026 span a wide range, roughly 2.5% to 8.30%, and where a bank sits in that range tells you more about its funding needs than its safety. Small finance banks pay the most because they need deposits and are less established, not because they are unregulated. They are licensed by the RBI and covered by DICGC insurance up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank, exactly like SBI.

That insurance limit is the useful frame. Below Rs 5 lakh with any one bank, chasing the highest rate is a reasonable thing to do. Above it, the sensible move is to split across institutions rather than to accept a lower rate for comfort.

Among large banks the spread is narrow. Kotak Mahindra tops the senior citizen table at around 7.30% for two to three year tenures, Axis and Bank of Baroda sit near 7.25% under specific schemes, ICICI and PNB reach about 7.10%, and SBI and HDFC anchor the bottom at roughly 7.05% and 7.00%. The gap between the best and worst large bank is about a third of a percentage point, which on Rs 5 lakh over five years is a few thousand rupees. The gap to a small finance bank is several times that.

Shortlist

Recommended options to compare

Use this as a starting list, then compare live India prices and warranty before buying.

01

Pick 1

The RBI held the repo rate at 5.25% on 5 August 2026

A unanimous decision with a neutral stance, alongside a GDP growth forecast raised to 6.7%. For depositors that means the current rate environment is likely to persist rather than improve, which strengthens the case for locking a longer tenure now rather than waiting for a better number.

02

Pick 2

Small finance banks, up to about 8.50%

Highest rates available, and DICGC insurance covers Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank exactly as it does at any other bank. Splitting deposits across banks to stay under that limit is the practical way to use them.

03

Pick 3

Kotak Mahindra, about 7.30% for seniors

The best senior citizen rate among large private banks on two to three year tenures. Worth comparing if you want a big-bank relationship rather than chasing the top of the table.

04

Pick 4

Axis Bank and Bank of Baroda, about 7.25%

Competitive under eligible tenures or special deposit schemes. Special schemes usually have a fixed window, so check the tenure carefully rather than assuming the headline applies.

05

Pick 5

SBI at about 7.05% and HDFC at about 7.00%

The default choice for most households, and the lowest of this group. You are paying roughly a percentage point for branch access and familiarity.

06

Pick 6

Senior citizen premium of 0.25% to 0.75%

Available at almost every bank. If a parent qualifies, booking the deposit in their name is usually the single largest rate improvement available.

Read the editorial notes

The number that actually matters is after tax. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab, so a 7.1% deposit returns close to 5% for someone in the 30% bracket. That is the figure to compare against debt funds, arbitrage funds and PPF, not the advertised rate. Use the FD calculator to see it for your slab.

Before booking: 1. Check whether a senior citizen in the family can hold the deposit, which is worth 0.25% to 0.75%. 2. Confirm the premature withdrawal penalty, usually 0.5% to 1%. 3. Submit Form 15G or 15H if your income is below the taxable limit, to stop TDS. 4. Ladder deposits across tenures rather than locking everything at one rate.

FAQ

Which bank gives the highest FD rate in India?

Small finance banks do, with rates reaching about 8.50% for senior citizens on selected tenures. They are RBI-regulated and deposits carry the same DICGC cover of Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank as any other bank, so the practical approach is to stay within that limit per institution.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. It is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate whether or not you withdraw it. Banks deduct TDS at 10% once interest crosses Rs 40,000 a year, Rs 50,000 for senior citizens, but TDS is only an advance - if your slab is 30% you owe the rest at filing.

Should I split an FD across banks?

If your total deposits with one bank exceed Rs 5 lakh, yes. DICGC insurance covers Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank including interest, so splitting is what makes chasing higher small-finance-bank rates sensible rather than risky.

This guide is educational. Interest rates, charges and eligibility in India change frequently and vary by borrower profile, so verify current terms with the bank before applying.
