At the 30% slab an FD paying this rate returns noticeably less than the headline number. Compare the effective yield against debt funds and arbitrage funds, which are taxed differently, before locking the money away.
- Compare small finance bank rates, which are usually higher, and check DICGC insurance covers up to Rs 5 lakh per bank per depositor.
- Submit Form 15G or 15H if your total income is below the taxable limit, to stop TDS being deducted.
- Check the penalty for premature withdrawal, usually 0.5% to 1% off the rate, before choosing a long tenure.

How to use this fd calculator india
A fixed deposit's advertised rate is not what you earn. Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly, which pushes the effective rate slightly above the headline number, and then interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab, which pulls it well below. This calculator does both steps so you can compare an FD honestly against other fixed-income options.
Formula
Maturity = principal x (1 + rate/4)^(4 x years). Tax = interest x slab rate. Effective yield = (after-tax maturity / principal)^(1/years) - 1.

FAQ
Is FD interest taxable in India?
Yes. It is added to your total income and taxed at your slab rate, whether or not you withdraw it. Banks deduct TDS at 10% once interest crosses Rs 40,000 in a year, or Rs 50,000 for senior citizens, but that is only an advance - you still owe the difference if your slab is higher.
Is an FD better than a debt mutual fund?
It depends on your slab. Both are taxed as income now, so FDs have lost much of their old disadvantage. FDs win on certainty and simplicity, debt funds on liquidity and the ability to defer tax until you actually redeem.
What happens if I break an FD early?
Most banks apply a penalty of 0.5% to 1% on the applicable rate, and pay interest at the rate for the period the money actually stayed, not the rate you booked. Check the penalty before choosing a long tenure.
