Short answer

Which bank gives the highest savings account interest in India?

Small finance banks pay the most on savings accounts in India - ESAF up to 8.00%, Suryoday 7.50% to 7.75%, and Utkarsh and Jana between 7.00% and 7.50% - while AU Small Finance Bank and IDFC FIRST sit around 6.50% to 6.75%. Large banks such as SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis and PNB pay only 2.5% to 3.5%. The catch is that headline rates apply to higher balance slabs, so your effective rate is usually well below the advertised one.

Our practical verdict

The spread on Indian savings accounts is remarkable: roughly 2.5% at the large banks against up to 8% at some small finance banks. On a Rs 5 lakh balance that difference is close to Rs 27,000 a year, which is more than most people earn from any other single financial decision they make in a year.

The catch is slab pricing. Almost every headline rate applies only above a threshold - sometimes Rs 5 lakh, sometimes Rs 10 lakh - with much lower rates below it. A bank advertising 8% may pay you 3.5% on the first few lakh. Read the slab table, work out the blended rate on your actual typical balance, and compare that number rather than the poster.

Safety is the question people ask next, and it has a clear answer. Small finance banks are licensed and regulated by the RBI, and DICGC insurance covers Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank including interest. That is exactly the same protection you have at SBI. The sensible approach is not to avoid them but to stay within the insured limit at each one.

Shortlist

Recommended options to compare

Use this as a starting list, then compare live India prices and warranty before buying.

01

Pick 1

ESAF Small Finance Bank, up to 8.00%

The highest rate available, but only on specific high-value balance slabs. Check where your typical balance actually falls before assuming the headline rate applies to you.

02

Pick 2

Suryoday Small Finance Bank, 7.50% to 7.75%

Competitive on higher balance tiers, with the same DICGC cover of Rs 5 lakh per depositor as any other bank.

03

Pick 3

IDFC FIRST Bank, around 6.50% to 6.75%

The best combination of rate and everyday usability here. Full-service digital banking with a rate roughly double what the large banks pay.

04

Pick 4

AU Small Finance Bank, around 6.50% to 6.75%

Similar positioning to IDFC FIRST, with a growing branch network. Worth comparing on app quality and service access rather than on rate alone.

05

Pick 5

SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis and PNB, 2.5% to 3.5%

The default for most households and the lowest rates here. You are paying several percentage points for branch density and familiarity, which is a real thing to value, just an expensive one.

Important: this is not financial advice

This is general information, not financial advice. Interest rates, fees, eligibility, and reward terms change often and vary by applicant. Verify current terms directly with the provider before applying, and consider speaking to a qualified financial adviser about your own situation.

Read the editorial notes

The honest conclusion is that a savings account is the wrong place for most of your money regardless of rate. Keep three to six months of expenses accessible, and move the rest to a fixed deposit, a liquid fund or your long-term investments, where the return is better and the tax treatment is often cleaner.

Before switching: 1. Find the slab your balance actually sits in. 2. Check minimum balance requirements and the penalty for breaching them. 3. Test the app - this is the account you touch daily. 4. Confirm ATM and branch access if you need cash regularly.

FAQ

Which bank gives the highest savings account interest in India?

Small finance banks, with ESAF reaching about 8.00% and Suryoday 7.50% to 7.75%. Those rates apply to higher balance slabs rather than the whole balance, so read the slab table before switching.

Is money in a small finance bank safe?

Deposits are covered by DICGC insurance up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank, the same protection that applies at SBI. The practical rule is to keep no more than Rs 5 lakh including interest with any single institution.

Should I keep savings in a savings account at all?

Only your emergency buffer and near-term spending. Beyond that, even the best savings rate is beaten by a fixed deposit or a liquid fund, and savings interest above Rs 10,000 a year is taxable under section 80TTA rules.

This guide is educational. Interest rates, charges and eligibility in India change frequently and vary by borrower profile, so verify current terms with the bank before applying.
