Costs look proportionate to your trading volume. Re-check if your volume changes, since AMC is fixed and dominates at low activity.
- Check the DP charge specifically - it is per scrip per sell, not per order.
- Confirm whether AMC is waived for the first year only.
- Add STT, exchange and SEBI charges and GST for the full picture; this covers broker charges only.

How to use this demat account charges calculator india
Zero brokerage does not mean zero cost. Indian demat accounts carry an annual maintenance charge and a flat DP charge on every delivery sell, and at low trading volume those fixed costs matter far more than the brokerage rate. This calculator adds all three so you can compare brokers on what you would actually pay.
Formula
Annual cost = (orders per year x brokerage) + (sell orders x DP charge) + annual maintenance charge. DP is charged on the sell leg only, so roughly half of all orders.

FAQ
What is a DP charge on a demat account?
A DP or depository participant charge is a flat fee applied each time you sell shares from your demat account, charged per scrip rather than per rupee. Because it is flat, it represents a much larger percentage on small sell orders.
Is a zero-brokerage demat account actually free?
No. Zero brokerage usually applies to delivery trades only, and the account still carries an annual maintenance charge and DP charges on every sell. For an occasional investor these fixed costs can exceed what brokerage would have been.
Does this calculator include government charges?
No. It covers broker charges only. Securities transaction tax, exchange transaction charges, SEBI turnover fees, stamp duty and GST apply on top and vary by trade type and value.
